So what skills do you need for this job, anyway?
I became a fake Christian wedding pastor by accident. Many years back, I was a student here trying to master the language..and having a hard time. I quit my full time English teaching job and enrolled in a Japanese language school, 20 hours a week plus lots of homework. It was intense but rewarding, however I needed to make some money to survive.
An acquaintance introduced me to the wedding industry (exactly what this industry is I will detail another time.) As would most Westerners new to Japan I was quite shocked such a part time job even existed. I met with the company, they were impressed with my basic Japanese (many pastors cannot speak at all and read their scripts phonetically) and I was hired. My skills were as follows: I was white, tall, young, clean-looking. I could pronounce Japanese fairly well. The job was mine. I did my first wedding one week after being hired. I received a total of 90 minutes training. To date, I have done more than 700 weddings and have had two complaints.
This part time job put me through Japanese school, paid for many over seas trips, and will one day pay for my kids to go to college. I remind myself of these facts on the rare occasion I question my chosen profession.
